Heathrow 'a unique airport'

15 Jan 2008

Heathrow airport performs a unique and important role within the travel industry and is different from some smaller airports, a spokesperson for the hub has claimed.

Damon Hunt, a Heathrow representative, said that the airport acts as a hub for international travellers who are passing through the UK or want to reach a destination that is not accessible from other bases.

'People use it [Heathrow] to fly internationally and to get to other destinations,' he said.

'It's used for transfers quite a lot, so about 35% of passengers are transfer passengers, they don't even leave the airport.'

Mr Hunt also gave a run-down of Heathrow's most popular destinations, a list that he said has remained 'fairly static' over the last couple of years.

Most popular of all is New York, followed by Paris and Dublin. Amsterdam and Frankfurt round off the top five, while Hong Kong and Los Angeles also appear in the list of top ten destinations.
