Copenhagen 'ideal for eco-conscious travellers'

17 Mar 2008

The tourism association of Denmark has claimed that the country's capital city is perfect for travellers who want their holidays to have an environmental focus.

One of the first things visitors to Copenhagen will notice, according to VisitDenmark, is the number of bicycles around the city.

More than a third of residents use their bike to travel to school, work or other locations and there are more than 300km of cycle paths in and around the capital.

There are around 2,000 free bikes available at 110 stations throughout the city and some hotel chains offer cycle hire.

Another environmentally friendly way to see Denmark is by kayak, with tours operated on Christianshavn's canal by Kajak-Ole.

The Danish capital's shopping scene features stores such as CommonZenz, which sells jewellery, beauty products and clothing made from natural and eco-friendly materials, and Aniel, where visitors can buy organic clothing, toys and home accessories.

A number of Copenhagen's hotels also take an environmental approach to business, pursuing initiatives such as water conservation and extensive recycling and offering organic foods for breakfast.
