London to celebrate Africa

26 Mar 2008

London will host an event this year to celebrate African life and culture.

Africa Day will take place on 25 May and be based at Trafalgar Square, with a number of events and activities taking place in the surrounding area.

This event was founded in 1963 as African Freedom Day and is inspired by the colours, textures and style that define Africa.

In addition to celebrating the nature and character of the continent, this free one-day festival will also recognise the contribution of London's African communities to life in the city.

Live music concerts will be one of the highlights of the event for many people, with Miriam Makeba, Pauline Oduro and the African Jazz All Stars all performing.

Adventurous eaters will be able to sample a range of authentic dishes, including suya, jollof rice, egusi, fried plantain, moi moi and kelewele.

There will also be a marketplace selling a range of arts, crafts, products and souvenirs, as well as a procession and masquerade including some of London's many community groups, women's associations and cultural organisations.
