'Lots of reasons' to be in Bruges

7 Apr 2008

Tourism Flanders has claimed that there are plenty of reasons for travellers to be 'in Bruges' this year, ahead of the release of a new film this month.

The movie In Bruges stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as a pair of hitmen who hide out in the Belgian city after a botched assassination attempt.

Ahead of the release of the film on 18 April, Tourism Flanders said that one of the reasons that people on a more leisurely trip to Bruges may enjoy it is the cuisine – it has more Michelin-starred restaurants per head than the whole of France.

The city of Bruges also boasts the Chocolate Walk – a trail that takes in the best shops selling famous Belgian chocolate.

Visitors can continue to indulge themselves in the pubs and bars as Bruges is reportedly famous for its beer. In the Middle Ages, beer was brewed as a substitute for water as it was considered safer to drink.

Travellers whose interests are more cultural may be interested in visiting one of Bruges' museums, according to Tourism Flanders, which houses works by Jan van Eyck and Rene Magritte, among others.

Other attractive features proposed by the tourism office include the city's romantic Lovers Lake and Minnewater locations and the soon to be opened museum dedicated to chips, another of Belgium's famous exports.
