Two Italian women gave a new meaning to the concept of adventure travel when they ended up in an entirely different country to the one they should have been heading for.
The pair were supposed to travel to the principality of Monaco for a meeting with their niece, Reuters reports.
However, their plans were scuppered by the fact that, in Italian, the phrase Monaco di Baveria actually refers to Munich, the capital of the German state of Bavaria.
The two women drove across the Alps from their home town of Trento in northern Italy only to discover that their niece was not where they expected her to be.
A spokesman for Munich police explained: 'The problem was they thought Munich was Monaco.'
Further chaos was caused by the fact that the travellers could only speak Italian and Spanish and it took local police more than an hour to work out that they should have driven to Monaco.
The pair's determination to meet their niece was not weakened by the setback, however, and they got back in their car to begin the 840-kilometre drive from Munich in southern Germany to Monaco on the south coast of France.
