Munich to celebrate 850th birthday

10 Apr 2008

The German city of Munich will be celebrating its 850th birthday this year and summer visitors to the destination will be able to join in with a number of events to mark the occasion.

A theme of 'bridge-building' will link the celebrations, which will run from mid-May to mid-September, meaning that connections will be created between the foundation of the city and the present day and between different parts of society.

The traditional Town Foundation festival will be held in Marienplatz, Stachus and Odeonsplatz on 14 and 15 June, with a variety of artists exhibiting the diversity of the culture of Munich.

One of the highlights of the event for Munich will be the reopening of the Cuvillies Theatre on 14 June.

This venue is one of Germany's finest rococo theatres and its reopening, following an extensive renovation, will be marked with a performance of the Mozart opera Idomeneo.

On 12 July, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra will give a special performance conducted by its musical director Christian Thielemann.

There will also be a number of new exhibitions opened throughout the summer, including Typically Munich, a permanent display at the Stadtmuseum.
