Hawk to keep an eye out at Scottish airport
1 May 2008
An airport in Scotland will soon see the results of a new approach to boosting safety using birds of prey to scare off seagulls.
Four-year-old Harris hawk Jasper will be used to scare away birds at Glasgow Prestwick airport in Ayrshire, as the seagulls can pose a serious risk to planes if they fly near the engines.
A colony of seagulls has recently roosted on the roof of the nearby Scottish Water building, prompting fears among officials that they could interfere with aircraft movements, icScotland.co.uk reports.
Prestwick airport was in the news recently when it was alleged that the Scottish hub may not have been the only place in the UK visited by Elvis Presley.
There is a plaque at the airport declaring that it was the only British location ever to welcome the legendary king of rock and roll, but it was claimed that the star once came to London to visit pop singer Tommy Steele.
Airport bosses refuted the claims, however, insisting that only photographic evidence would prove Elvis ever visited England's capital.
