1 May 2008

The United States welcomed some 3.4m international visitors in January this year, 11% more than in the first month of 2007, according to government figures.

Overseas arrivals – excluding Canada and Mexico – increased by 9% following strong growth in 2007, with the number of Irish visitors rising by 22%.

Visitation from the UK was up by 6%, while Spain (17%), the Netherlands (16%) and France (15%) were among America's strongest western European markets.

The number of visitors from the country's neighbours Canada and Mexico increased by 13% and 10% respectively in January.

Department of commerce spokesman William G Sutton said: 'The travel and tourism industry has a growing and positive impact on our economy.

'The strong start in 2008 builds on the momentum set in 2007, which was a record-breaking year for international arrivals and receipts.'

International visitors spent some $11.38bn (£5.72bn) in the US in January, 23% more than the previous year, contributing to the tourism industry's total value of $1.3trn.
