IHG unveils '100% green' hotel

6 May 2008

The InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has unveiled plans for an establishment that is designed to be 100% ecologically friendly.

IHG's latest brainchild, which has been named Innovation Hotel, will use wind and solar power alongside a range of other strategies to reduce its environmental impact.

All of the hotel's unused non-perishable food will be given to charities or food banks, while household waste will be used to provide heat and power.

The windows will be made from recycled glass and all furniture and fittings will be constructed from recycled materials.

David Jerome of IHG said: 'People who do their bit for the environment when they're at home are likely to be interested in doing the same when they're staying in a hotel.

'Responsible tourism is about growing in a way that makes sense for business while managing our impact on the environment and community.'

IHG has implemented environmental initiatives at a number of its hotels around the world, including the Willard Washington in the US, which relies entirely on energy from wind farms.
