Nepal to celebrate Mount Everest Day

9 May 2008

Nepal has unveiled plans to hold Mount Everest Day on 29 May, an occasion that is hoped to boost the country's appeal to tourists and adventure travellers, according to reports.

The first men ever to set foot on the peak of Mount Everest – Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay – did so on 29 May 1953.

Mount Everest Day will commemorate this day with an annual event that is set to include film screenings, photography exhibitions and cultural programmes, AFP reports.

Nepal's tourism ministry spokesman Prem Rai said: 'This year will be the first time we celebrate the event and pay tributes to Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.'

He added: 'The day will also be an opportunity to promote Nepal's adventure tourism in the international arena.'

In February, the airport that most mountain climbers and hikers use to access the Everest region was renamed Hillary-Tenzing airport.
