Mexico 'must continue to develop'

14 May 2008

Despite its traditional popularity as a tourist destination, Mexico must continue to develop and innovate to keep up with the global industry, it has been claimed.

This year, travel is expected to contribute 14% of Mexico's gross domestic product, making it the tenth largest tourism economy worldwide.

Louise Oram, communications and PR manager for the World Travel and Tourism Council, said the Central American country is 'hugely dependent' on its holiday industry.

Despite this strength, the many emerging destinations across the globe are expected to pose competition to countries such as Mexico, making innovation important.

'With new emerging markets growing rapidly and undertaking massive tourism-related investment programmes, Mexico must focus on its long-term development in order to keep up with the competition of these new tourism destinations,' Ms Oram said.

Some of Mexico's most popular locations are its luxury coastal resorts, such as Cancun, Los Cabos and Ixtapa.
