Visitors to Africa urged to be eco-aware
14 May 2008
Holidaymakers in Africa will be asked to pay more heed to the environmental impact of their travel under a new scheme.
Africa's environment, as well as its cultures, local customs and natural resources, are thought to be at risk from the effect of poorly managed tourism, New Era reports.
As a result of this fact, the Heritage Environmental Management Company has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the impact that travel can have on Africa.
While the scheme will not discourage people from visiting the continent, it will urge travellers to take the environment into account when making their holiday choices.
Greg McManus, managing director of the company behind the campaign, said: 'If visitors to this continent can be encouraged to reduce their consumption of energy, water and other natural resources; to become more sensitive of the needs and values of host communities then the continent would be free from these challenges.'
Mr McManus pointed out that, if visitors strive to limit their use of water, energy and other non-renewable resources, these can be released for the benefit of the continent.
