Israel begins year of celebrations
15 May 2008
The Israeli tourist office has announced that the country recently kicked off a year of celebrations.
Festivities got underway in earnest on 14 May, a date that is marked every year in Israel, as the country celebrates 60 years since it became an independent state.
The very first element of the year-long party came last week with a countrywide series of firework, laser and light shows illuminating the skies above Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Tiberias and other cities.
Among the highlights of the year's events will be the Red Sea Jazz Festival, which will be held in Eilat between 25 and 28 August.
The festival attracts around 40,000 people and features more than 30 concerts. This year the event will see more acts than ever, as performers flock to join in with the 60th anniversary celebrations.
From 10 to 19 July, Jerusalem will host the International Film Festival, which will boast a broad spectrum of movies from across the world.
Later in the year, on 24 September, Israel's capital will host Violins of Hope, a concert including the orchestras of Istanbul and Raanana, led by well-known conductor Shlomo Mintz.
