A380 lands in Tokyo in first Asian flight

20 May 2008

Singapore Airlines flew the Airbus A380 to Tokyo Narita airport on 20 May, marking the first time that the world's largest commercial aircraft operated a service to an Asian destination.

The flight was delayed by around four hours as bad weather at Narita caused it to be temporarily diverted to Nagoya.

There were 394 passengers and 28 crew on the A380 flight, which was timed to coincide with Narita airport's 30th anniversary celebrations.

Chew Choon Seng, Singapore Airlines' chief executive officer, said: 'We are honoured to be the first to operate the A380 to and from Japan as part of Narita airport's 30th anniversary celebrations.

'We are also pleased to celebrate our own 40th anniversary of commencement of services between Singapore and Japan with the start of A380 services.'

Singapore Airlines was the first carrier to begin commercial flights with the A380 and is currently the only airline using the superjumbo.

A number of other major operators have placed orders for the giant aircraft, including British Airways, Air France, Emirates and Qantas.
