Brits 'interested in emerging locations'
20 May 2008
British travellers are showing an increasing interest in destinations with emerging economies such as Brazil, China, Dubai and India, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).
Frances Tuke, a spokeswoman for Abta, said the largest amount of tourism growth over the past few years has been occurring in emerging destinations and mid- to long-haul locations.
She said that mainstream hotspots in Europe and the Mediterranean are still 'immensely popular' but are failing to keep up with emerging destinations in growth terms.
Commenting on the reasons behind this trend in emerging economies, Ms Tuke said: 'They are exciting, they are exotic, they are developing fast and so have tourism infrastructure in place and they have invested more money in tourism so the services are better.
'Similarly, tour operators over here have wanted to push the boundaries of where they travel and have found that it has been a good match that people want to go to visit different kinds of countries.'
According to the UN World Tourism Organisation, developing countries' share of the tourism industry rose from 34% in 2000 to 40% in 2007.
