Tokyo Narita international airport is today (20 May) celebrating its 30th anniversary.
The Japanese hub opened on 20 May 1978 and since then has handled some 680m passengers and 41m tonnes of cargo.
To mark the occasion,
Singapore Airlines operated the first ever flight to Narita using the Airbus A380, a connection that will be joined next year by a service provided by
Air France.
Since it opened its doors 30 years ago, Narita airport has not been able to use the full length of its 4,000-metre runway. It will only gain full access to the landing strip in a few years' time when development works are completed.
A second runway has been added since 1978 and is currently being extended, meaning that the airport will have the capacity to handle 220,000 flights per year by 2010.
Narita competes with a number of major airports in Japan for a share of the incoming visitor market, including Tokyo Haneda, Fukuoka, Osaka and Nagoya.
Flights to Japan are provided by major European airlines such as
British Airways,
Virgin Atlantic,
Lufthansa and
KLM.
