United fan makes it to Moscow on £85

21 May 2008

Many football fans considered Moscow a bad choice for the venue of this year's Champions League final owing to the cost of travelling to the city, but one supporter has proved that the trip is possible on a shoestring budget.

Manchester United fan Martin Sheehan managed to travel from England to Moscow on just £85.

The 25-year-old set off on his 3,000-mile round trip on Saturday 17 May, estimating that it would take him five days to reach the Russian capital.

Firstly, he flew from Liverpool to Stockholm before heading to Riga, the capital of Latvia. From there, he caught a bus to Moscow which arrived at 10:00 on the morning of the match day.

Martin told the Daily Mirror that anyone who considered it impossible to get to Moscow without flying directly wasn't putting in enough effort.

He added: "Some people can't do it because they haven't got the time or they have kids. But if you have got the time it's so easy."

Manchester United play Chelsea at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium tonight in what is the first all-English final in the history of the Champions League.
