21 May 2008
A new piece of research from the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has underlined the importance of young people in the worldwide travel industry.
Youth travel now represents around a fifth of international tourist arrivals and is one of the fastest growing sectors of the industry, according to the UNWTO.
The research, which was conducted over the past five years, also found that travelling is having a positive effect on young people, with 80% returning from their trips more tolerant and respectful of other cultures.
Young travellers' average spend per trip increased by 40% in five years, reaching 1,915 (£1,536) in 2007.
The majority (70%) of young people travel with a purpose, such as learning a language, volunteering or studying abroad.
According to the UNWTO, Australia, the USA and France are the most popular youth travel destinations. More than half (60%) of tourism authorities across the world said they see youth travel as an important part of the future of their travel industry.
