Nearly 2m 'to flee UK in bank holiday exodus'

23 May 2008

Some 1.9m holidaymakers are set to flee British shores over the coming bank holiday weekend, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

A number of factors are expected to combine to make holidays popular this weekend, including the poor weather forecast in the UK and the beginning of school half-terms.

Spain is once again set to be the top British holiday destination, with the Canary and Balearic islands leading the way.

A number of other mainstream locations will see an influx of Brits, according to Abta, such as Italy, Turkey, Egypt and Greece.

The city break market is likely to be dominated by the major urban centres of Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, Rome and New York.

Abta president Justin Fleming said: 'Much has been [said] about the credit crunch this year, but there is real strength in the travel industry as is shown by the number of people leaving the country this weekend.

'Many of our members are reporting good financial results against a steady increase in bookings.'
