Qantas engineers take strike action

Qantas maintenance engineers have gone on strike following disputes over pay rises, according to reports.
Around 100 Qantas engineers walked out from an airport in Sydney after the Australian airline was only prepared to offer a 3% wage rise in the face of calls for an increase of 5%.
Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association federal secretary Steve Purvinas said: 'We find that grossly inadequate considering we haven't had a pay rise for two-and-a-half years, and inflation is well above four per cent.'
Hundreds of Qantas employees were brought in from around the country in an attempt to fill the gaps created by the walk out while the airline refused to negotiate with the strikers.
Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon said:'We have every right to resist it and every right to use everything that the law allows us to do to keep our airline running.'
Qantas has threatened job cuts and asked for voluntary redundancies after rising oil costs has seen their annual fuel bill increase to $2 billion.
