Tourism chiefs promote Indian cruises
29 May 2008
Tourism officials are set to entice a rising number of visitors to India by promoting cruise tourism, according to reports.
Coastal locations such as Goa, Puducherry, Kochi and Visakhapatnam are being mooted by the tourism ministry as possible destinations for cruise travel.
Docks in these destinations are to be transformed as hotels, resorts and restaurants are built to replace areas originally used for coal and cargo transportation in order to attract tourists.
Ambika Soni, the Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, said: 'With the Auroville Village and the Aurobindo Ashram adding legacy and richness to make Puducherry as a complete tourism spot, this Union Territory will also be made a favourite destination for cruise tourism.'
Holidaymakers will have the opportunity to enjoy wildlife and bird sanctuaries in Vidharba whilst others could take part in the Ganges experience as the government plans to add activities to encourage cruise tourism.
According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), about four million foreign tourists visited India in 2006.
