Queen bids farewell to famous cruise ship
2 Jun 2008
Queen Elizabeth II will today (2 June) attend a ceremony to bid farewell to the luxury cruise ship QE2, the famous liner that was named in her honour.
Her majesty launched the ship in 1967 and will watch it set sail from Southampton before it retires later this year.
Today's ceremony was scheduled to mark the 55th anniversary of the Queen's coronation.
A 41-gun royal salute will be fired at midday to celebrate the occasion, followed by a 62-gun salute an hour later.
Some 300 people have been invited to the event, including nine captains of the QE2.
After more than 40 years in service, the QE2 will retire in November this year.
The famous vessel was bought by Dubai World for £50m and will be turned into a luxury floating hotel positioned alongside the man-made Palm Jumeirah island, off the coast of Dubai.
