Sports tourism 'crucial to Fiji'

3 Jun 2008

Sports tourism is becoming one of the most important sectors of Fiji's travel industry, a local government minister has claimed.

Speaking at the sixth annual Dive Fiji Expo last week, interim tourism minister Tom Ricketts said that sport tourism is now a multi-billion dollar business and is one of the fastest growing service industries, the Fiji Times reports.

A recent industry report showed that sales in the dive industry totalled F$804m (£272.3m) in 2007, an increase of 5% on the previous year.

Mr Ricketts praised events such as the Dive Expo for promoting the activities available in Fiji and providing a way to tap into the sports tourism industry.

'I understand the staging of this Dive Expo…is an extraordinary achievement in that it has recognised diving as a sport and help[ed] promote it as special event,' he said.

Fiji is located in the south Pacific Ocean and comprises more than 300 islands.

It offers a range of activities to its visitors, including snorkelling, rafting, caving, hiking and rock climbing.
