Auckland airport about to become cheaper

4 Jun 2008

Flying from Auckland airport in New Zealand will soon become cheaper with the removal of the NZ$25 (£10) international departure fee.

As of 1 July, the departure fee will be replaced by a passenger services charge, which will be levied on airlines rather than travellers.

Don Huse, chief executive of Auckland airport, said that the new system should make travel through the hub much simpler.

'This change brings Auckland airport into line with other major gateways around the world,' he added. 'It will improve facilitation through to departure.

'It will be one thing less to worry about. It will reduce traveller processing time through Customs. Airline passengers will have a much easier and more streamlined departure experience.'

George Hickton, chief executive of Tourism New Zealand, also welcomed the change, saying it will make passengers' trips to Auckland 'even more enjoyable'.

Auckland is New Zealand's largest and most populous urban centre and boasts attractions including the harbour bridge, the Auckland Domain park and Mount Eden.
