The US department of transportation (DOT) has announced that the country's biggest carriers, such as
Continental Airlines and
US Airways, improved their punctuality rate in April this year.
Nineteen airlines reported their on-time performance in April, revealing an average punctuality rate of 77.7%.
This is higher than the level recorded in April 2007 (75.7%) and in March 2008 (71.6%).
Hawaiian Airlines reported the highest on-time arrival rate of 90.5%, followed by SkyWest (84%) and Southwest Airlines (83.3%).
The data also showed that April's rates of flight cancellations and mishandled baggage both declined in comparison to the previous month and previous year.
Some 1,113 complaints were submitted to the DOT regarding airline service in April this year, a reduction of 10.8% compared to the number received in April 2007.
Continental was one of the best performers with regards to cancellations, with only 0.3% of its services called off in April.
