As the quality of food available in the UK improves, British people are showing an increasing interest in sampling the best in foreign cuisine, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).
Frances Tuke, a spokeswoman for Abta, said the stereotypical image of the British tourist who travels to a foreign resort and orders a full English breakfast is swiftly becoming a thing of the past.
'Our food experiences have improved in this country and as a result we want to taste the best when we are on holiday,' she said.
'Meal times are an ideal time to relax, have good conversation and you are ideally with people you want to be with on holiday - enjoying good food and wine to go with that just cements that holiday experience.'
Ms Tuke said that the top destinations for food lovers are locations whose food has been well received in the UK, such as India, China, Thailand, Spain, Italy and France.
Research by the World Travel Market found that 86% of Brits make the effort to try local foods when they are abroad.
