Record-breaking year for Australian airports

6 Jun 2008

Australia continued to be one of the world's most popular holiday destinations last year as its airports saw record-breaking passenger figures.

A report released by the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics showed that 22.8m passengers arrived and departed from Australian airports in 2007, a 6% increase on the previous year.

Sydney attracted by far the largest share of the market, with 45.6% of all people travelling to and from Australia flying through the city's airport.

The majority of the rest of the market travelled through the country's other major cities of Melbourne (20%), Brisbane (17.2%) and Perth (10%).

A number of new operators, including Emirates, entered the list of Australia's top ten carriers, while flag-carrying airline Qantas saw a slight decline in its market share.

Transport minister Anthony Albanese said last year's record-breaking performance was achieved in spite of worldwide financial instability.

'Despite global economic uncertainties and rising oil prices, Australia remains a favourite destination of overseas travellers, and the desire of Australians to holiday and do business abroad remains strong,' he said.
