BA launches new subsidiary

19 Jun 2008

British Airways (BA) has launched OpenSkies, its new transatlantic subsidiary.

The carrier operated its first flight today (19 June) between Paris Orly and New York JFK and will continue to offer daily services with capacity to carry up to 82 passengers.

OpenSkies is the first airline created specifically to take advantage of the 'open skies' agreement between the EU and the United States.

British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh was confident that the new venture would be a success.

'This is an exciting new chapter in our history as, for the first time, we will be flying directly between continental Europe and the US,' he said.

'We are confident that OpenSkies will have a successful future. It will benefit from British Airways' experience in the transatlantic market and have the ability to be innovative and respond quickly to changing customer demands.'

British Airways is considering a number of European destinations that could serve as future OpenSkies bases, including Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt and Milan.
