Mobiles 'to become crucial for air travellers'

19 Jun 2008

The mobile phone could become the one item that no air traveller can do without in five years' time, according to research.

Sita, a leading provider of IT services to the aviation industry, claimed that the range of new services to be made available on mobile phones will turn them into 'personal travel folders'.

Mobiles are currently used by 90% of air passengers and increasing numbers of people are expected to use their phones to store boarding passes, baggage tracking information and payment data.

In the coming years, passengers will be given the option to use their phones to receive real-time service updates and to check in for their flights.

'Some of these services are already available to passengers, for example in Norway, Japan and Germany paperless travel is a reality on some routes,' said Jim Peters, Sita's chief technology officer.

'But what our research shows is that these mobile services will be available to all travellers worldwide over the next five years. In fact, by the end of 2010, 67% of airlines plan to offer mobile check-in. By then 82% of airlines also plan to offer notification services on mobiles.'

Bmi recently carried out a trial of paperless boarding, which involved its passengers checking in for their flights online and receiving their boarding passes as a picture message.
