The first Gulf region airline to fly to Belarus will be
Etihad Airways, when flights to Minsk begin on 5 August, 2008.
Twice-weekly flights to Belarus' capital are expected to improve investment ties and trade links between the United Arab
Emirates (UAE) and Belarus, with trade between the two countries reaching over $30-40m (£15-20m) annually.
An A319 plane will be able to fly 104 passengers from Abu Dhabi to Minsk and
Etihad Airways' chief executive, James Hogan, is confident the service will be a success.
'To make history as the first airline from the Gulf region to fly to Belarus is a great honour for
Etihad Airways,' he said.
'We are extremely excited at the prospect of helping to strengthen further the trade ties between the two countries through the launch of our new Minsk service.'
This venture follows meetings held between Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the UAE, and president Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus last year in Abu Dhabi.
A delegation of high-level business leaders from the UAE will also visit Belarus to study trade opportunities further, coinciding with the launch of the new flight service.
