US carriers
Continental Airlines and
United Airlines have announced an agreement for extensive cooperation on networks and services.
The companies said that the decision is set to benefit its customers all over the world and also boost revenue and efficiency.
Continental also intends to join the Star Alliance, which could see it cooperating with other members such as
bmi,
Lufthansa,
Singapore Airlines and TAP Portugal.
Larry Kellner, chairman and chief executive of
Continental, said: '
Continental's plan to partner with United and join the Star Alliance will provide substantial new opportunities for all of our customers.'
United Airlines boss Glenn Tilton added: 'The teams worked well together to identify opportunities to create a unique and competitive partnership extending well beyond a traditional code share agreement.'
The two carriers, along with other members of the Star Alliance, are currently planning joint ventures that will lead to new services in Latin America and the Asia Pacific region.
