The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has suggested that it could be a long time before the credit crunch stops people from taking holidays.
Frances Tuke, a spokeswoman for Abta, said that the association was far from surprised to hear that people are still finding the money to go on holiday this year.
She said the range of holiday options now available combined with the importance that many people attach to their annual breaks means that consumers will do everything they can to guarantee themselves a holiday.
'We know from previous recessions and difficult times that holidays are the last things that people are prepared to give up and nowadays, with the huge range of choices when it comes to holidays, people can pick ones that will suit their pocket,' she said.
Commenting on particular destinations for this summer, Ms Tuke said that Spain is 'holding up very well' and defying expectations that eurozone countries would be unpopular.
According to a poll of more than 2,000 people by American Express, 80 per cent of Britons are not willing to give up their summer break to save money.
