Lonely Planet: More to Estonia than Tallinn

30 Jun 2008

There is much more on offer to travellers in Estonia than simply the country's capital of Tallinn, according to Lonely Planet.

Tom Hall, the publishing company's travel editor, said that Estonia and its capital had become practically inseparable.

He said that Tallinn is 'one of Europe's most beautiful cities' and claimed that one of the capital's most appealing aspects is its history.

'The reason people are attracted to Tallinn in the first place is its medieval old town, which is stuffed full of cafes, restaurants and clubs – it's a very pleasant place to settle in for a couple of days,' Mr Hall said.

Despite the appeal of Tallinn, the Lonely Planet spokesman urged visitors to Estonia to explore the wider country, something which is fairly easy to achieve owing to the size of the nation.

'Estonia is a small country and it's easy to get around, even to somewhere like the island of Saaremaa, which is Estonia's largest island,' he commented.

'It's four hours away by bus, but it's covered in dense forests, it's got some wonderful beaches and some little fishing villages, and its star attraction is a town called Kuressaare, which is not only a lovely historic town but also has a growing reputation as a spa destination.'
