Dubai tourism plans 20% cut in emissions

17 Jul 2008

The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) has announced a strategy to achieve a 20% reduction in carbon emissions in the hospitality sector by 2011.

Khalid A bin Sulayem, director general of the DTCM, called upon companies in the industry to cooperate to meet this target.

Department leaders plan to develop a database of CO2 emissions to monitor how the emissions reduction scheme is progressing.

The initiative, which is the first of its kind in Dubai, will focus on the conservation of natural commodities and the responsible use of resources such as water and gas.

A 'best practice' awards programme will be introduced to recognise the companies that are operating efficiently and to encourage other organisations to follow their lead.

The DTCM scheme is in line with the plans of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, to turn the emirate into an environmentally-friendly community.
