Holidays 'behind only homes, investment for Brits'

31 Jul 2008

Holidays are now so valued by British people that they have become the most important expense after buying a home and investing for the future, according to research.

A survey by private bank Cater Allen found that people from the UK are now spending £64bn on holidays every year.

Around one in five Brits spend more than £2,500 on holidays every year and nearly a third splash out more than 10% of their annual income on travelling abroad.

Nearly half (46%) of the survey respondents expressed the opinion that holiday choices reflect on a person as an individual.

More than a third of the people polled said that they are swayed in their holiday decisions by the 'celebrity hotspot' reputations of destinations such as Saint Tropez, Dubai or Rio de Janeiro.

According to a recent survey carried out by the BBC, more than a third of British people still plan to go on holiday every year, regardless of how hard the credit crunch bites.
