31 Jul 2008
People planning trips to New York this autumn may be able to see some new and exciting movies at the city's annual film festival.
The screenings organised for the 46th New York Film Festival will be held at the Ziegfeld Theatre as the event's traditional home of Alice Tully Hall is being renovated.
Taking place between 26 September and 12 October, the festival will be opened by Lauren Cantet's film The Class, which won the Palme d'Or award at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
Richard Pena, chair of the festival selection committee, said that Cantet has 'pioneered a new kind of social cinema'.
He added: 'The Class is the finest example yet of this filmmaker's important work and we're delighted to have it open this year's New York Film Festival.'
Visitors to New York interested in experimental cinema can see some of the best examples of new filmmaking from around the world at the festival's Views from the Avant-Garde screenings.
