Lufthansa announces further flight cuts

8 Aug 2008

German airline Deutsche Lufthansa AG has announced that it will scrap around 140 flights today (August 8th).

This is the second time this week the airline has cancelled flights, as it was forced to cut 360 following its regional unit CityLine's pilot strike, reports Thomson Financial.

CityLine pilots were campaigning for higher wages and despite focusing the majority of their efforts in Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg flights were also affected, the news agency claims.

The 36-hour strike is due to end at noon today and the airline's chief executive, Wolfgang Mayrhuber, has warned that pilot strikes undermine the firm's competitiveness.

In the long run, pilots are actually putting their own jobs at risk, he told the Neuen Osnabruecker Zeitung newspaper.

The global airline industry will slash flights by 7% in the lead-up to Christmas, the Guardian reports.

It also faces an 'even more difficult' year in 2008, according to industry consultant Chris Tarry.
