The Mediterranean island of Cyprus can now be considered one of the world's leading tourism destinations, a travel industry representative has claimed.
Marios Christodoulou, a spokesman for Love Cyprus, which is part of the Association of National Tourist Office Representatives, said the island has historically had a positive reputation among holidaymakers.
'As time has gone on, the country had developed into one of the most popular tourism destinations in the world,' he added.
'It has coped with modernisation well and caters for the wide and demanding demographic market, providing an array of services and amenities for all markets.'
One of the island's major features is its range of beaches, 52 of which have been awarded Blue Flag status, as well as the provision of popular holiday activities such as golfing, diving and cycling.
Cyprus is particularly popular among British tourists, partly owing to the fact that most of the people who live on the island speak English.
