Johannesburg Zoo's Mayan pyramid nearly complete

29 Aug 2008

People planning flights to Johannesburg, South Africa will soon be able to visit a new attraction at the city's zoo.

The city council announced that construction of the Mayan pyramid is progressing well and the new area should be ready to open before the end of the year.

Located in Johannesburg Zoo's Amazonia section, the pyramid explores elements of early Mayan civilisation and will house a number of different animals from the Central and South American region.

Nick Atchison, the zoo's collection planning consultant, said: 'The pyramid will house reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates and golden lion tamarins.

'The main pyramid will have two floors of exhibits; the third level will be used as an observation deck.'

The pyramid is part of Johannesburg Zoo's five-year plan to upgrade its facilities with seven different zones, with themes such as the heart of Africa, southern safari and extreme environments.

Flights to Johannesburg are available with airlines including British Airways, Air France, Virgin Atlantic and South African Airways.
