Volvo Ocean Race prepares to launch

8 Sep 2008

One of the world's toughest and most hotly-contested sailing competitions, the Volvo Ocean Race, will get underway in Spain next month.

The gruelling nine-month contest will launch from the port of Alicante in south-east Spain on 11 October.

Founded 35 years ago, this event is the oldest round-the-world regatta with stopovers and is considered one of the three most important sailing competitions in the world.

It was formerly held every four years but is now a biennial event and regularly attracts international media attention.

Alicante will be in the spotlight next month as it hosts the launch of the race but travellers interested in catching up with the event will be able to do so at a number of locations over the coming months.

The competitors will first sail round the west coast of Africa to reach Cape Town, where the second leg will get underway on 15 November.

Future stages will launch from destinations including Singapore (18 January), Qingdao (14 February), Rio de Janeiro (11 April), Boston (16 May) and others.
