Holidaymakers urged to forget about work

15 Sep 2008

Holidaymakers have been urged to leave their professional concerns behind while they are away following research highlighting the difficulty that some people have in forgetting about work.

A survey carried out for insurance provider More Than found that interruptions from work were the primary cause of holiday stress for office workers this year.

The proliferation of mobile phones, Blackberries and other modern technology was blamed for the disruptions that ruined holidays for more than a third (37%) of people.

Carmel McCarthy, PR manager for More Than, said it is important for people to relax while they are on holiday so they can return to work feeling refreshed.

'People forget that the most precious time is the two weeks they take off with their family so they should leave the technology at home and go and enjoy it,' she said.

'Companies will appreciate them coming back refreshed and able to offer 110%, rather than 70% if they've been contacted already on their holiday.'

According to a survey conducted for 3 UK this year, nearly a third (31%) of people feel that they have to be contactable by mobile phone at all times in case of a work emergency.
