Turks & Caicos cruise port to reopen in October
16 Sep 2008
The cruise centre on Grand Turk in the Turks & Caicos Islands is set to be reopened in early October, it has been announced.
An engineering survey was carried out following the passage of Hurricane Ike and it was confirmed that the cruise ship pier, which can accommodate two ships at one time, had not sustained any damage.
Despite slight damage to the cruise centre's retail and restaurant complex, the facility is due to reopen on 8 October.
Giora Israel, vice-president of strategic planning and port development for Carnival, the company that operates the Grand Turk centre, said: 'We believe we can complete repairs to the cruise centre within a 30-day period and bring cruise ships back to Grand Turk.
'We will be able to provide many of the wonderful beach, snorkeling and watersports experiences that Grand Turk is famous for, along with the oversized pool and food and shopping opportunities at the cruise centre.'
The Grand Turk cruise centre has been open since 2006 and is one of the Caribbean's leading cruise destinations, boasting an 800-foot-long private beach and a swimming pool.
Carnival's Destiny vessel is scheduled to be the first ship to call at Grand Turk on 8 October.
