Denmark prepares for festive celebrations

17 Sep 2008

Holidaymakers will soon be arranging their holidays in Denmark to visit the country's Christmas fairs and markets.

In Aalborg, the festivities get underway at the end of November when Santa Claus sails in from Greenland to open the traditional Christmas market in the Old Square.

The fair will sell handcrafted ceramics, glassware, jewellery and much more, while nearby galleries will open up their workshops to visitors, providing plenty of opportunities for visitors to pick up Christmas gifts.

Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark, gives tourists the chance to indulge in some midnight shopping in areas such as the Latin Quarter, which boasts a maze of small boutique shops.

Other attractions in the city include its old town, Den Gamle By, which comprises 75 authentic Danish buildings and hosts a market every weekend in December.

Another location that travellers may be interested in visiting is Odense, which was home to fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen.

During the Christmas period the city hosts a fair themed around the famous storyteller, where visitors will be able to walk along cobbled streets and may meet fairytale characters such as the little match girl and the snow queen.
