'Island airport' under consideration for London

22 Sep 2008

London mayor Boris Johnson is giving consideration to plans for a new London airport based in the Thames estuary, according to reports.

A new hub could be situated on an artificial island close to the Isle of Sheppey in Kent in an attempt to cut congestion at Heathrow and reduce the need for expansion at the airport.

Mr Johnson plans to carry out a study to determine the feasibility of the idea to base a new airport in the Thames, BBC News reports.

The Conservative politician first proposed the idea of a new airport during his campaign to become London mayor, when he described the location of Heathrow as 'a planning error of decades ago'.

He added: 'What we are looking at is a way of solving this great capital's aviation needs without endlessly expanding our number one international airport.'

Airport operator BAA has said that Heathrow is operating at maximum capacity and considers it crucial that a third runway be built at the airport. The proposal has been opposed by local residents and environmental campaigners.

The government is due to make a decision on the potential expansion of the London hub before the end of the year.
