LBA 'fastest growing northern airport'

23 Sep 2008

Leeds Bradford airport (LBA) has declared itself England's fastest growing northern airport following a strong summer period.

During the month of August, the airport handled some 345,000 passengers, the highest figure ever recorded in a single month and 5% up on last year.

From May to August, more than 1.2m people passed through the Yorkshire gateway, effectively making it one of the fastest growing airports in the UK.

The strongest demand during this period related to the airport's services to the Spanish hotspot of Malaga on the Costa del Sol and the Irish capital of Dublin.

Commercial and aviation development director Tony Hallwood said: 'Leeds Bradford international airport continues to outperform the market and takes its lead from the strength of the Yorkshire economy.

'With our route network now at 76 destinations and still growing, the airport is delivering to both business and leisure passengers and increasing inbound tourism opportunities.'

LBA is currently in discussion with a number of its airline customers, including bmi, on the prospect of further route expansion in 2009.
