25 Sep 2008

New York City has promised tourists planning a winter trip to the Big Apple that they will enjoy an 'unforgettable holiday season'.

The city's marketing agency claimed that New York is one of the most exciting places to be during the festive season, with glittering department store windows and spectacular Christmas trees.

Visitors will see the festive period officially get underway in New York when Santa Claus arrives in Herald Square as part of a procession on 27 November.

Another landmark event, the lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, is scheduled for 3 December this year.

George Balanchine's production of The Nutcracker will come to the Lincoln Center from 28 November to 3 January, while the Radio City Christmas Spectacular will be in residence at the Radio City Music Hall from 7 November to 30 December.

George Fertitta, chief executive of NYC & Company, said: 'The holidays in New York City offer a one-of-a-kind travel experience.

'We invite visitors to take advantage of all of the wonderful activities taking place throughout the five boroughs and to embrace the energy that fills the city during this joyful season.'
