Norway becomes UNWTO's 154th member

Norway can look forward to more developments in its tourism industry over the coming years after becoming a member of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
The Scandinavian country is the 154th state to join the UNWTO and the organisation's 45th member in Europe.
Norway has a national strategy for its tourism industry which includes developing the sector as a driver of economic growth, alongside traditional trades such as fishing and agriculture.
Over the coming years the country intends to establish itself as a destination for sustainable tourism and also support its rural communities through year-round visitation to support employment.
Between the years 2000 and 2006, the number of visitors to Norway increased by an average of 4.1% per year, reaching more than 4m international tourists for the first time two years ago.
SAS Scandinavian Airlines is one of the major carriers serving the country, along with the likes of bmi and British Airways, with regular flights to cities including Oslo, Stavanger and Bergen.
Winter sports enthusiasts could be considering visits to the country over the coming months, with cities such as Trysil and Hemsedal offering plenty of skiing and snowboarding opportunities.
