Another tunnel section opened by Eurotunnel

29 Sep 2008

Eurotunnel announced today (29 September) that it has opened another new section of the Channel Tunnel, enabling a further increase in traffic following the fire that occurred on 11 September.

The reintroduction of interval four, which is the middle section of the north tunnel, means that five of the six intervals that comprise the Channel Tunnel are now operational.

Interval four's opening follows the restart of services in the south tunnel on 13 September and the resumption of operations in the first part of the north tunnel on 22 September.

A boost in departure frequency will mean that traffic can now depart every 90 minutes, rather than every two hours.

From 1 October, capacity will be raised from 170 trains per day to 210.

People travelling on Eurostar services will now see almost 100% of normal capacity become available, with the new interval allowing the operator to use between 55 and 58 paths per day.

Passengers should be aware that Eurostar is planning a modified timetable in order to best utilise the capacity available through the Channel Tunnel.
