Celebrity Cruises has launched its newest ship, Solstice, at an event in Germany that reportedly attracted tens of thousands of local residents.
The liner set sail for the first time from Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg on 28 September and made its way along the River Eems, watched by local residents who gathered along the riverbank.
Dan Hanrahan, chief executive of Celebrity Cruises, described the launch of the 2,850-passenger ship as 'a momentous occasion' for the company.
He added: 'Celebrity Solstice is the perfect manifestation of what the Celebrity brand is all about: extraordinary service, spectacular dining and fabulous style and design.
'And as the first in a series of five Solstice-class ships, it's a vivid example of the growth and momentum of the Celebrity brand and our commitment to meet our guests' and travel agent partners' demands for more vacation options with Celebrity.'
The amenities onboard the new ship include the cruise industry's first 'lawn club', a half-acre recreation area with real grass, as well as ten restaurants, a spa and a theatre.
Celebrity Solstice will be berthed in the Netherlands until 24 October to carry out two sea trials, before heading across the Atlantic to Florida in early November to begin its maiden season of eastern Caribbean cruises.
