Port of Southampton has announced that its new multimillion pound fourth cruise facility will be named Ocean Terminal.
The terminal has been named after its predecessor Ocean Dock, which in the past played host to some of the world's most famous cruise liners, including Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary.
Construction is underway on the £19m terminal, which is being constructed following a 20-year agreement with Carnival UK, the company that operates Cunard, Ocean Village, P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises.
The 300-metre-long tube-shaped building will include a baggage hall the size of 14 tennis courts and have the capacity to hold some of the largest cruise vessels in the industry when it opens in May 2009.
Jonathan Manser, managing director of the architecture company in charge of the terminal construction, said: 'The new terminal has been designed to enhance people's holiday experience from the minute they enter the terminal until the minute they leave at the end of their cruise.
'We want to create a more exciting departure gate for passengers, which will enable them to see their cruise ship as soon as they enter the terminal building. The building itself will be extremely striking and visible from the shore.'
Doug Morrison of Associated British Ports said that the Port of Southampton is now 'the cruise capital of northern Europe' following 'enormous growth' in the industry over the last few years.
